Microsoft ships a first-party Power Query connector for Azure SQL database, at General Availability, supported in Power BI semantic models and dataflows, Fabric Dataflow Gen2, Power Apps dataflows, Excel, Analysis Services and Dynamics 365 Customer Insights. It supports both Import and DirectQuery, authenticates with Windows, Database, Microsoft Account, Basic or a service principal, and exposes the database through the Sql.Database and Sql.Databases functions. Power BI reads from the database; nothing is written back.
