Azure SQL Database

About

Azure SQL Database is a fully managed relational database that Microsoft runs as a cloud service, built on the SQL Server engine. In AEC it is most often the warehouse a firm loads its project, cost and payroll systems into, so reporting runs off one store instead of each platform's own dashboard. Microsoft handles patching, backup, high availability and scaling, and it is bought as provisioned or serverless compute rather than per seat. It answers the same T-SQL as on-premises SQL Server, so existing reports and ODBC drivers keep working against it. Azure SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines are separate services on the same engine.

How teams use it

By audience

IT & Systems Administration
  • Provisions the logical server and database, then issues the login a connector platform uses to write construction data in
  • Receives Kroo's scheduled extracts from Procore, Sage 300 CRE, Bridgit, TradeTapp and Membrain into one schema the reporting team queries
  • Serves Power BI semantic models and Qlik Sense apps directly, in Import or DirectQuery mode, with no separate extract step
  • Mirrors into Microsoft Fabric OneLake so analysts query an analytics copy while the operational database keeps serving the app
  • Replaces a self-hosted SQL Server the firm had to patch, back up and size itself
