QGIS
About
QGIS is a free and open-source desktop geographic information system that creates, edits, visualises, analyses and publishes geospatial data on Windows, macOS and Linux. It reads a wide range of vector, raster and spatial-database formats, and offers a Processing toolbox and model designer for repeatable analysis, a layout designer for large-format maps and atlases, and Python scripting and a plugin repository for extension. QGIS Server publishes the same projects as OGC WMS, WMTS, WFS and WCS web services.
How teams use it
By audience
- Civil Engineering
- Civil engineers build site and corridor constraint maps from terrain, flood, utility and land-ownership layers before design starts.
- Engineers run slope, catchment and flow-path analysis on digital elevation models from the Processing toolbox.
- Environmental Engineering
- Environmental engineers map habitats, flood zones and contamination data to support permitting and environmental assessments.
- Processing models turn a screening workflow into a repeatable process that is re-run when source data is updated.
- Landscape Architecture
- Landscape architects map existing trees, vegetation, terrain and drainage to prepare site analysis drawings.
- Tree and green-space inventories captured in the field are edited and mapped in QGIS for planting and site proposals.
- Planning
- Planners overlay zoning, land-use and constraint layers to screen candidate sites and prepare master-plan mapping.
- The print layout and atlas tools produce consistent large-format maps for planning applications and consultations.
- Surveying/Geomatics
- Surveyors import survey points and scans, reproject them between coordinate reference systems and digitise features with the CAD-like advanced digitising tools.
- Geomatics teams publish cleaned survey and base-map layers to the wider project team as OGC WMS and WFS services through QGIS Server.
By phase
- Concept & Planning
- Teams compare candidate sites by overlaying terrain, flood risk, ownership and planning-constraint layers.
- Feasibility and entitlement maps are produced with the print layout designer for clients and planning authorities.
- Design
- Survey, base-map and environmental layers are prepared in the project coordinate reference system and exported, for example to DXF, for CAD and BIM teams.
- Designers test options against terrain, visibility and drainage analysis run in the Processing toolbox.
