About
Autodesk Civil 3D is infrastructure design software for civil engineers that models roads, rail, site grading and drainage in a dynamic 3D environment. Built on AutoCAD, it keeps alignments, profiles, corridors, surfaces and pipe networks as linked design objects, so a change to one re-cuts the cross-sections, volumes and plan-set labels that depend on it. Survey, GIS and quantity-takeoff toolsets carry the same model from existing conditions through to the construction documents.

- Civil Engineering
- Model roads, highways, rail alignments and intersections as dynamic corridors, so editing an alignment or profile re-cuts every dependent section and sheet label.
- Design storm and sanitary networks with hydraulics/hydrology analysis, and round-trip the pipe network to InfoDrainage for sizing before finalising it.
- Build existing and proposed surfaces and report cut/fill volumes between them to drive grading and mass-haul decisions.
- Publish the infrastructure model to InfraWorks for alternatives and to Navisworks for clash review against building and utility models.
- Surveying/Geomatics
- Import field-captured survey data into the Survey Database and adjust traverses before it becomes design geometry.
- Run field-to-finish linework code sets so points arrive as figures, breaklines and an existing-ground surface in one pass.
- Attach ReCap .rcp/.rcs point clouds and drone-derived DXF surfaces as existing conditions to design against.
- Pull parcels, easements and utility context in through the Connector for ArcGIS, and save changes back to ArcGIS Online.
- Designer / Drafter
- Produce the plan-and-profile sheet set straight from the model — sheets, viewports, section views and labels stay linked to the design objects.
- Consume other disciplines' surfaces and alignments through Data Shortcuts so each object is authored once and referenced everywhere.
- Annotate with style-driven labels and tables, so a design change re-labels the sheets instead of requiring manual edits.
- Export to plain AutoCAD DWG for consultants who do not have the Civil 3D object enablers.

- Concept & Planning
- Build terrain models from survey or GIS data for land-use studies and transportation system planning.
- Test corridor and grading alternatives early, then push the preferred option to InfraWorks for stakeholder-facing context.
- Screen a site for drainage and outfall feasibility before the layout is committed.
- Design
- Author the design model — alignments, profiles, corridors, surfaces, parcels and pipe networks — as linked objects rather than static linework.
- Iterate storm and sanitary sizing against hydraulics and hydrology analysis, then re-import the sized network.
- Coordinate with the building model via Revit and with the CDE via Forma Data Management so site and structure share coordinates.
- Pre-Construction
- Generate materials, volume and quantity-takeoff reports from the design and existing surfaces to feed the estimate.
- Hand the corridor and surface model to Trimble Business Center as the basis for machine control and stakeout data.
- Publish the model into Navisworks or Revizto for constructability and clash review with the building trades.
