About
PlanGrid is a mobile-first construction field app for drawings and sheets, RFIs, submittals, punch-list tasks, daily field reports and jobsite photos. Autodesk acquired PlanGrid in 2018 and folded its capabilities into what is now Forma Build (formerly Autodesk Build, itself built from PlanGrid and BIM 360). PlanGrid is closed to net-new customers and runs in maintenance mode, but it is still deployed: existing tenants sign in on the web and through the PlanGrid Build apps for iOS, Android and Windows, and its REST API is still published.
How teams use it
By audience
- General Contracting
- Distributes the current drawing set and sheet versions to every field crew, so GCs work off one source of truth instead of paper rolls.
- Logs and routes RFIs and submittals from the field back to the office during Construction.
- Tracks punch/QA tasks with pins on sheets to close out deficiencies before handover.
- Specialty Contracting
- Subs pull the latest coordinated sheets on tablets at the work face and mark up installed conditions.
- Create and answer RFIs tied to a specific sheet location without leaving the field.
- Complete assigned punch-list tasks and attach progress photos as proof of work.
- Superintendent
- Runs daily field reports and progress photo logs from a phone or tablet on site.
- Assigns and monitors punch/issue tasks across trades and tracks their closure.
- Confirms crews are building to the newest sheet version and flags superseded drawings.
- Foreman / Field Supervisor
- References current drawings and details at the work face without carrying paper.
- Captures field photos and marks issues directly on the sheet for follow-up.
- Receives task assignments and updates status as work is completed.
- Project Engineer
- Manages the RFI and submittal logs, linking each item to the affected sheet.
- Publishes new drawing revisions and hyperlinks sheets so the field always has current documents.
- Compiles as-built markups and closeout documentation.
- Owner/Developer
- Reads the live plan set, progress photos and field reports without waiting for a monthly report from the GC.
- Follows RFI and punch-list status on their own project to see what is open at handover.
- Receives the as-built sheet set and field documentation as the turnover record.
By phase
- Construction
- Primary use: field teams access live drawings, log RFIs and field reports, capture photos, and work punch lists from the jobsite.
- Keeps every trade on the latest sheet version as revisions are issued during the build.
- Closeout & Operations
- Punch lists are driven to completion and signed off before handover.
- As-built drawings, markups, and field documentation are compiled for the owner turnover package.
