About

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance is Microsoft's enterprise financial management application. It covers general ledger, payables, receivables, budgeting and budget control, cash management, fixed assets and tax across many legal entities, currencies and countries. Its project financials post project costs and revenue, invoice project milestones and turn finished projects into fixed assets. It shares the finance and operations platform with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, which Microsoft sells as a separate product.

How teams use it

By audience

Accounting & Finance
  • Runs the general ledger with financial dimensions across many legal entities and currencies, so a contractor's subsidiaries and joint ventures close on one chart of accounts
  • Captures and matches vendor invoices in accounts payable, and runs receivables, collections and subscription billing for the customer side
  • Project accountants post project costs and revenue to work-in-progress or profit and loss, and recognise revenue on long-running contracts
  • Calculates and reports tax across 57 countries and regions, for firms building in more than one jurisdiction
Executive Leadership
  • Gives the CFO cash-flow forecasting, scenario modelling and business performance planning across every entity in the group
  • Analytical workspaces embed Power BI reports on Finance data, so leadership reads margin and cash position without a separate BI build
IT & Systems Administration
  • Exposes every public data entity over OData, plus a Data management package REST API for bulk and recurring integrations
  • Registers integrations as Microsoft Entra ID applications with OAuth 2.0, and ships an Excel add-in that reads and publishes entity data

By phase

Pre-Construction
  • Project accountants set up project budgets, cost and revenue profiles and budget control before mobilisation, so costs post to the right accounts from day one
Construction
  • Posts project costs and revenue as the job runs, to work-in-progress accounts on long projects or straight to profit and loss on short ones
  • Invoices project milestones to the customer and recognises project revenue period by period
Closeout & Operations
  • Converts a finished capital project into a fixed asset, which an owner-operator then depreciates in Finance's fixed-asset register
